Saturday, May 17
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Presented by Vicki Talvi-Cole, CST, NTS, Certified CranioSacral Teacher and Therapist
6 contact hours** $160
Do you have clients who complain, time and again,
that their neck and shoulders feel stiff, tight or sore? That
they feel such stress in the neck that even turning their head
may be painful? You might even facilitate a release, yet the next
time you see them you notice that their shoulders are raised high?
Did you know that headaches, eye problems, ear problems, shoulder,
upper arm, lower back and even TMJ are released when you facilitate
the relaxation of the nervous system? When the nervous system
is relaxed, the muscles relax, no longer pulling on the bones
that hold the neck and shoulders in old patterns of stresses.
You then gain the flex-ability to really “rubber neck”
and in-joy wholeness.
The intent of this class is to teach participants to access the
wisdom of the neck: C-1 through C-7, as well as the occiput and
shoulders. Discussions including hand placements, palpation skills
to access the core, along with focused thought. Possible causes
of mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual issues that may
be present in a holding pattern will also be discussed. This is
a hands-on teaching, so each student will have ample time to recognize
and “feel the felt sense”. With this knowledge, the
student may then integrate this tool into any healing art and
empower their clients.
Prerequisites: Willingness
to explore; this workshop is open to the public.
What to bring/wear: Comfortable clothing, massage
table, linens, and an open mind.

of the career of the massage therapist to know how to use the
mind/body at its optimal efficiency. This is an experiential,

conscious choices and methods on how to identify and stop limiting,
unconscious movement patterns and beliefs that cause stress, tension
and pain, and interfere with a graceful and effective massage.
You will feel the body return to its natural balance, efficiency,
and ease in movement in the practice of the arts of massage such
as: bending, lifting, hand contact, positions of mechanical advantage
and the various massage techniques. Rochelle has taught this class
for over 20 years and it was included as part of the curriculum

"Deep Massage:
The Lauterstein Method" is a unique soft tissue therapy that works
simultaneously with the structure and energy of the person. With
techniques that are applied consciously and thoughtfully, clients
can experience dramatic enhancement of body, mind and spirit health.
Deep Massage was developed by David Lauterstein who has been teaching
it since 1982. This powerful method has its roots in the therapeutic
traditions of Structural Bodywork (an offshoot of Rolfing) and
Zero Balancing, which approaches the person equally from the energetic
perspective. Because Deep Massage works with energy as well as
structure it is easier for practitioners to perform than many
deep tissue therapies. It also more effectively empowers clients'
health because it helps them let go of tension from the inside
out, rather than having practitioners work to release clients'
tension from the outside in!
In 2008 and 2009 Tucson
Touch Therapies is delighted to offer the certification process
in Deep Massage: The Lauterstein Method.
This will consist of three 20-hour workshops
and supportive homework, constituting 60 hours of training. With
each workshop you will receive extensive hands-on training, a
manual and DVD demonstrating each of the techniques you will be
learning. Subjects covered will include: Deep Massage history,
theory of energetic and structural bodywork, energetic and structural
anatomy, the Seven Dimensions of Touch, session design, and over
70 new Deep Massage techniques.
This certification process will be presented
in three weekend workshops. All three levels must be successfully
completed for certification.

basic theory and techniques of Deep Massage, including thehistory
and definition of Deep Massage: The Lauterstein Method, how to
work simultaneously with energy and structure, how to create a

Reflexologist and Massage Therapist
32 contact hours** $495
Reflexology is the study, science and art of
using various touch techniques on specific points of the feet,
hands and ears to promote a deep sense of relaxation and to support
the natural healing properties of the body. It is based upon the
premise that these reflex points correspond to organs and glands
in the body and, when stimulated, produce therapeutic results
throughout the body. Through lectures, reading assignments, demonstrations,
and practice, students will learn basic information about Reflexology
and its history, and the techniques of finger- and thumb-walking.
Upon completion of this introductory training course, students
are able to practice Reflexology on the feet of family and friends.
Prerequisites: High school
diploma/GED; must be at least 18 years old; basic anatomy
and physiology understanding is desirable. No bodywork experience
is necessary to attend this class. Members of the community are
encouraged to attend.
Suggested text: Feet First, by Laura
Norman (a comprehensive manual is included in the
course).
What to bring/wear: Massage table or La Fuma-type
chair; bed pillow; 2 large bath or beach

Wednesday & Thursday, June
25 & 26 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Presented by Barbara Grandstaff, LMT, CNMT, NCTMB
16 hours** $275
This course is the introductory workshop required
for the Basic and Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) series.
It introduces students to the principles of neuromuscular therapy
and postural evaluation. With this as a basis for a treatment
strategy, participants can locate and alleviate sources of pain
and dysfunction in the body. Pain and dysfunction are frequently
caused by abnormal amounts of tilt, torque, rotation, flexion/extension,
and projection that distort the spine, pelvis, and sacroiliac
joints. These distortions result in muscle tone imbalances, trigger
points, and ischemia. Participants will learn how to measure body
structure, evaluate postural and movement habits that contribute
to pain syndromes, and balance the pelvis to facilitate alignment
with the body’s center of gravity.
The Basic NMT series consists of Intro to NMT; Basic NMT1: “The
Core” Low Back, Hip & Abdomen; Basic NMT2: The Lower
Extremity; and Basic NMT3: The Upper Extremity.
Prerequisites: State of Arizona
massage license and enthusiasm.
What to Wear/Bring: Loose and/or stretchy comfortable
clothing, massage table or thick mat, and note-taking materials.
Barbara Grandstaff, LMT, CNMT,
NCTMB, has been a full-time practitioner and part-time teacher
of massage and bodywork since graduation from The Desert Institute
of the Healing Arts in 1986. She taught anatomy and physiology
at the Desert Institute of the Healing Arts for four years and
was trained by Paul St. John to teach NMT seminars in 1996. Barbara's

Hawaiian Massage, also known as lomi lomi, is
part of ancient Hawaiian healing systems that involve a holistic
approach to help promote wellness in body, mind and spirit. Lomi
lomi literally means “to and from,” or “to work
in an out, as the paws of a contented cat.” There are many
types of lomi lomi; each one reflects the traditional lineage
in which it was practiced and handed down. Oluli Oluea means “to
harmonize body, mind and spirit” and “to ignite the
life force.” This special type of Hawaiian massage uses
forearm and elbow strokes that are gentle yet deep, and soothing
yet invigorating all at the same time. Emphasis is placed on working
with the client’s breath and ensuring a continuous, flowing
treatment. In addition to being an excellent addition to a treatment
menu, Hawaiian Massage is a great way to save the massage therapist’s
wrists, hands and thumbs.
Participants should note that less conservative draping is used
for Hawaiian massage than other types of massage.
Prerequisites: Student or professional
massage therapist/bodyworker
What to bring/wear: Massage table, linens, oil,
hand towel, and note-taking supplies
Bertha Valenzuela, LMT, has
been practicing massage therapy since she graduated from the Academy
of Health Professions in San Diego, California in 1999. One of
her specialties is Hawaiian massage (Oluli Oluea). In addition
to maintaining her private practice at Tucson Touch Therapies
in Tucson, Arizona, Bertha taught Anatomy Lab at the Desert Institute
of the Healing Arts (now Cortiva Institute - Tucson), and was
a teaching assistant for all levels of massage technique instruction
as well as an anatomy and physiology tutor for three years. She
is very excited about sharing the fluid and dynamic techniques
of Oluli Oluea.
