Bowenwork ®

Bowenwork ® is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Australia. It is sometimes called the “homeopathy” of bodywork. It utilizes small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly. People of all ages respond to Bowenwork ® according to what their bodies need. Bowenwork ® is extremely effective in helping with a variety of acute and chronic ailments, including back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder pain, fibromyalgia and other conditions that often do not respond to more conventional approaches. It does so holistically, by using the body’s innate healing mechanisms. Bowenwork’s ® gentle moves promote healing on a physical, chemical, emotional, mental and energetic levels. The practitioner delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves) and the body does the rest, responding in its own time, as it is able. While there are a few specific situations in which a particular “procedure” is contraindicated, Bowenwork ® is safe and appropriate to use for individuals of all ages in all degrees of health. When faced with an acute injury, the practitioner may address only the traumatized parts of the body because there has not been enough time for the injured client to begin compensating for the injury. However rather than focusing on a single complaint, Bowenwork ® addresses the entire body, by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls over 80% of the bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors. Many people today live in a state of high stress and sympathetic AND over-stimulation (fight and flight mode). Healing can occur only after the ANS shifts from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance (rest, relax, and repair mode). Bowen seems to affect that shift. The session seems to reactivate the recovery process in stimulating where healing from trauma, illness or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau.

Bowenwork ® promotes healing throughout the entire body. Bowenwork ® is appropriate for everyone: newborns, highly trained athletes, pregnant women and the elderly. Each person responds differently to a Bowenwork session, according to his or her own body’s need and ability to heal.
